Bin Laden still around
Bin Laden has issued yet another tape, his fifth this year, a rallying call for Al-Qeda and their apologists.

After six years, it seems the Americans are no nearer finding him and and bringing him to account for the 9/11 atrocity. Bush says getting Bin laden is 'a low priority'.

The french special forces had BL in their sights a couple of years ago, a sniper was waiting on the order from the yanks to 'top him' they were told not to and BL and his entourage got away without harm, so, to answer one of your questions, yes, it does suit the americans to keep him free. As long as they have a 'bogeyman' it gives the hawks in the US senate the excuse to have a massive defence budget
I think it suits the US purpose for bin Laden to be floating around issuing terrible threats.
In the years since 9/11, Islam has become more and more commonly headline news (the teddy bear is an outstanding example) and frankly each time it does it is rarely good publicity for them. So spout away bin Laden, you are not helping your cause any more old son.

Not precicely but they could find him if they wanted.

I believe they need a "Bogey man" to justify what they are doing, they've killed or captured just about all the other bogey men.

The alleged death was reported by the Saudi Arabian secret service to its government, which reported it to the French secret service.
CNN's Nic Robertson said that he had received confirmation from an anonymous Saudi source that the Saudi intelligence community has known for a while that bin Laden has a water-borne illness, but that he had heard no reports that it was specifically typhoid or that he had died."

Anyway I think the tapes could well have been made in advance, he must have known what the yanks would do following 911 and presumably he managed the post 911 in advance knowing that he'd be innefective by either being dead, captured or having to hide.

OBL alive or dead is largely an irrelevance. They all operate in cells and its doubtfull there is one singel leader.
In addition if he is dead saying so may provoke the mad mullahs and he could well be made a martyr or whatever the religion gives to its extreme followers (is there an equivalent to a saint?)

It seems he has moved from Afghanistan to Pakistan but we are unlikely to track him down there which poses a much different problem. All of the suicide bombers and Taliban are trained in Pakistan so are we trying to hit the wrong target by focussing all our energies in Afghanistan? I seriously think we should alter our strategies!
