Royal Research ship, Discovery, googled it and it was on an expedition to the Falkland Islands in 1928 organised by the Royal Geographical Society.
As indicated by dot's post, it should be RRS not RR.

NERC (Natural Environment Research Council) currently operate 3 RRS's - Discovery, James Cook, James Clark Ross - and the RV (Research Vessel) Prince Madog.

For some reason there is no mention in the Wikipedia article of the decommissioned NERC vessel RRS Challenger, affectionately known as "Clanger".
