Marlbrough Buildings in Bath

I have been in one of these buildings, near the lower part of the road and the cellars just go down and down. Does anybody know how many floors they go down especially the one at the top of the road and what they were used for many years ago.

Hi Giggles - I expect the deep cellars here were a practical solution adopted by the Georgian builders, to the need for their houses to have a good solid platform but at the same time to cope with the steep slope of the land at this point. I think also in this aprt of Bath some streets of that date were constructed with a central drain, so the adjacent houses would be 'built up' above the drain level. If you look for the street on http://www.old-maps.co.uk you can see that it seems to have been laid out around the same time as the Royal Crescent nearby.
