i think they were made up for the film.

Jack and Rose were a ficticious couple - that was made clear in the press at the time of the film's launch. Director James Cameron himself made it known that he was basing the story on Romeo and Juliet.

And it's not completely Hollywood, there really was a ship called the Titanic, and it really did hit an iceberg- honest!

It really must have been one helluva lettuce that's all I can say.
