It's crooked because it is constructed of wood, which warped over time, causing the distinctive crooked shape. No, it won't fall over, I think it's finished warping now, The por man who designed the spire drowned himself when he saw what had happened to it.
Isn't that the one (or one of the ones) where the Devil was sitting on the spire when a real virgin arrived for her wedding? He was so surprised that he jumped off, twisting the spire.

If another virgin ever comes to be married, he will jump the other way and straighten the spire.
Not much chance of a virgin wedding in Chesterfield in my experience!
Yep, it was built of 'green' wood (unseasoned) which as it dried out, took on the characteristic warp. As all the wood fibre is there, there's no loss of strength in the wood. p.s I think Chesterfield is chocka with virgins - a straw poll around my mates confirms they are 'not of the correct standard'
1st lad: So what's this Silver Ring thing that's come across from America?
2nd lad: They promise to abstain from sex until marriage.
1st lad: So what's new then?
