Film about ordinary man with powers until he sees the colour red

What is the name of this film?..... When i was a boy my dad recorded (on our very first betamax video) a film. It was about a man who ended up with special powers. This was all good until he saw the anything that was the colour red - where he promptly lost those powers. I am desperate to find the name of this file. Parts of the film i remember: 1) Man running alongside a car on the freeway (yes it was an american film i think) ntil he saw a red door 2) Man being put in electric chair and asking for the red roses in the gallery to be removed
