Please could anyone tell me where the colours derive from on the British Flag, my partner told me that they represent England, Northern Ireland and Scotland, but there is nothing on the flag associated with Welsh!! Can anyone tell me?!

PS. My boyfriend is English and I am Welsh, so I am not sure whether he is winding me up or not! Thanks!!

The British Union flag is a combination of the English, Scottish and Northern Ireland national flags.
The Welsh flag is not included as it is classed as a Principality.
the union flag originally had a picture of a leek on it in the left hand corner but was printed in hong kong using cheap printing ink when first washed to show the king the flag the leek leaked out so that is why the union flag has stayed like it has for years.
Do British born people really not know the origins of the Union Flag?

It is the Union Jack only when it is flying from a ship, otherwise it is the Union Flag.
ethel, and there was me thinking jack was the bloke that was the leek out of the flag
that washed

Fay Mousse - I am sorry you are disappointed that I do not know the origins of the flag! Didnt realise it was something that I should know!! This is called the answer bank because people post answers, not to judge people.
I wasn't judging you - more the education system.

I was taugh the Union Flag, the Welsh Flag, all the Commonwealth Flags and most world flags at school. It was a long time ago.

Plus my boyfriend is English and he doesnt seem to have any issues with me being Welsh!
Take no notice of Newsdesk, cymruambyth - he does it to get a reaction.

Bit like a toddler soiling his pants.
