James the First of England who was also James the Sixth of Scotland.
In fact he was already James the sixth of Scotland and then became James the first of England on the death of Elizabeth.

Thus he united the crowns of Scotland and England, which has been the case ever since.

James was the son of Mary Queen of Scots.

Until the act of union in 1707 the Scots and the English could have had different Kings.

There was still the crown of England and the Crown of Scotland, just worn by the same man

It was the act of union that united the kingdoms
Both right - but yes, James became king after Elizabeth, as she had no children of her own.
