Watched it the other night. Can anyone explain the whole Pinbacker thing. It seems he was on Icarus 1 and then somehow on icarus 2. You hardly see who it is but as far as I can tell he's a religious nutter who has somehow stowed away on Icarus 1 to stop it because he thinks it's some how gods will that the sun should die. is that about right? Can anyone expand on the character?

I think he got onto Icarus Two whilst the crew were looking around Icarus One, then he detached the two ships somehow which is why they had to fire themselves back across the gap. Wasn't he the Captain of Icarus One?

To be honest, the whole film turned into a confusing mess by the end and I lost interest. The film was also totally inacurate, as the Sun won't change for the next two billion or so years when it will expand, swallowing the whole Solar System, before exploding it's outer shell and evetually shrinking into a White Dwarf. It wouldn't just go out like a coal fire.

fair enough BDW I know about how the sun will finish etc, Let's just accept the film as some fiction, I'm really trying to inderstand it more thourougjly, perhaps I need to watch again.
I too found the whole movie a confusing depressing mess and did not understand the mad man at the end. However there are some relatively good explanations of the movie on Amazon if you read the readers reviews written about Sunshine. I think it is something to do with the Sun that is supposed to be God and the madman is the Devil or something along those lines! If you read some of the reviews it does make it a bit clearer!
Hope this helped. Cheers Sue
the psych officer of icarus 2 would have ended up the same as him. they both had an unatural fascination with basking in the light of the sun needing more and more exposure each time to get their ''fix' hence the icarus 1 captains burns. his devotion to the sun had driven him mad as he wanted to watch the sun die knowing that he would be the last man in the entire universe remaining.

Ok thanks all
I watched it last weekend, it was such a great story up until the Pinbacker part of it.

I can't tell you how disappointed I was with that!
And it was the prompt of this question LOL
