Not if you mean Europeans (based on your question above this) since the potato was not introduced to Europe until the 16th Century...

However, people would definitely haved chipped and mashed the predecessor of the potato, which was the parsnip. The only difference would be that most people did not have enough fat for deep frying - fat was a rare and precious commodity.
