Europe - the ancient Greeks chewed "mastiche" which was resin from a tree. Then the Mayans in South America started chewing "chicle" also the sap from a tree.
Chewing gum as we now know it originated in the USA in the 1800's .... heard it on the radio today lol.
I'm quite sure it was the native Americans who first chewed some form of gum. So, I think it predates even the 1800s - although the first gum may have been actually sold then.
