John Custer and he was'nt a general. He was not only defeated but killed scalped and mutilated

The mutilated bit was to release the spirit. The bit where the stomach fills with gas & explodes. So that was the Indians ways of liberty or freedom to the next life.

I thought it was George Custer - he was a star of sorts in the U.S. Civil war. He was one vain character - they called him "Old Yellow Hair" and accorting to the traveling museum of his stuff I saw at the Autry Museum in L.A. he was a total jerk. But then most staff officers may be total jerks. I do know this because it was part of the traveling exhibit - he wore a certain device similar to an athletic supporter which enhanced the appearance of mane naughty bits - somewhat to an "inside the breaches cod piece" Oh the sexy devil! They say the ladies loved him!! The Indians sure didn't.

Full name George Armstrong Custer. As for rank, he started as a 2nd Lieutenant at the start of the Civil War, having passed out last in his class at West Point. During the war, he gained rapid promotion, as in time of war the army expands on a temporary basis, creating a large number of temporary or brevet ranks. Custer made it to General, but when the war ended and the army shrank back to its peacetime complement, all temporary promotions were cancelled and officers who remained in the army reverted to their substantive rank. At the time of the Little Bighorn, Custer was substantively a Colonel, but as a high profile character the media continued to refer to him as General Custer, and he did little to discourage them from doing so.

Custer yes, but before going into battle he had shaven off his famous golden locks, so his body was never formally identified on the battlefiels by the Souix. The only survivor was a horse i believe.
