Holiday not too far from Bristol Airport

Its my birthday at the end of January and we are flying from the north east to Bristol to meet up with friends who live there. Anyone got any suggestions of a good place to stay for a weekend which is no more than an hours drive from Bristol airport. We are just looking for somewhere to have a pleasant wander about (town or country), maybe find a pub at lunchtime, decent restaurant on the evening and a hotel (probs 4*). We are not looking for night clubs! Ideas greatfully received! Thanks

Cheddar and Cheddar Gorge are not to far south of Bristol.
Its a nice place!
Google it for accomodation there are several hotels in and around.
