Atlas

Atlas was a Titan who fought against the New Gods in Ancient Greece.  After their defeat he was given an exemplary punishment and forced to carry the heavens on his shoulders for eternity.

He briefly escaped when Heracles took his burden while Atlas fetched him the Golden Apples of the Hesperides.  But Atlas clearly wasn't too smart, thinking he'd tricked Heracles into taking over his duties full time he agreed to hold them temporarily while Heracles got himself into a more comfortable position.  Naturally, Heracles just picked up the Apples and was on his way leaving Atlas as he had found him.

According to Greek Mythology the burden was made slightly easier for Atlas to bear when the god Perseus came along and turned him to stone with the head of Medusa (the hydra with snakes as hair) severed as a gift to Athena.
Hmm, I hadn't heard that one.  I thought Perseus existed before Heracles in the Greek myth timeline.  Must look it up.
