More than likely from the latin Albus - meaning white. Probably relating to the white cliffs that greeted visitors from across the channel, including the Romans. But no one really knows for certain. Not even Blake, Milton or indeed the Libertines. Great word, though.
By the way, if I've got the Latin for white wrong forgive me! It's something like that though.
