is this England or the USA?
If it is England, the North was racing ahead building huge towns from the profits of the industries booming in towns like leeds, manchester and Liverpool and Birmingham , the South was becoming overcrowded as agriculture was failing and labourers were moving into the Cities and living in overcrowded squallor with no work and hunger.

The difference beween north and south is, one is at the top of the compass, and the other isn't.
