the keith family founded the modern' peterhead but its birth as a settlement probably started in the 13th century when cistercian monks from deer abbey built the first harbour. peterhead has been established for more than 400 years (celebrating its quatercentenary in 1987) the oldest known building in Peterhead dates from 1585. the origins of the Peterhead name most probably the name comes from the 13th C. St Peter's Church.
