As long ago as 1600 BC, Minoan wall paintings depicted the latest two-piece fashion. So Frenchman Louis Reard, an engineer by profession, was more than three-and-a-half milennia behind the times when he launched his version in 1946.

Still, they say there is nothing new under the sun, and Reard who died in 1984 at the age of 88, deserves to be remembered for bringing the bikini to popularity and for christening it.

On june 30 1946, the first post-war atomic bomb test was carried out on Bikini Atoll in the South Pacific. Eighteen days later, Reard registered the name. The precise connection has never been established.
