Can any yellow bellys or archeologists out there please help me do a bit of research.I have been told there is a burial mount down Stain Lane which lies between Withern & Mablethorpe. I pass this bit of land on a regular basis and it stands in the middle of a field and is never touched by the land owner. I have also been told it is a burial mount of a noble man possibly a king.
Any enlightenment on this would be appreciated.

Looking at the ordnance survey map evidence, it sems to be an impressive series of mounds and earth enclosures but without other information it's impossible to even guess at what they are. The OS current map simply marks 'moat', so maybe some local reseach has shown it to be the remains of a moated structure such as a medieval manor house. If you go onto http://www.old-map.co.uk and work your way through the gazeteer, you'll se there are yet more earthworks shown in the area.
Have you tried asking your local studies library / museum?
The mound alongside Tothill Manor is said to be the surviving motte of a motte and bailey castle. In the 13th century Tothill and Gayton-le-Marsh formed one manor, belonging to Lord Willoughby de Broke, the earliest references to Gayton being in 1202 and 1206. Lord Willoughby de Broke was lord of the manor and chief landowner from medieval times until c1910.

(The records of the Manor are in the Lincomshire Record Office)
The moat at Stain Hill Farm is listed on the Schedule of Monuments (SM 31635). The mound 300 metres ENE of the moat is possibly the origin of the name Stain Hill.
