It's too late for this year, but next year I'd like to have a REALLY old fashioned, pagan tree for solstice.
I know about holly, ivy, mistletoe, piney type trees, sun images
What other icons or symbols could I include?
LIttle animals?
Celtic knots?
styrofoam miniature stonehenges? (mmm, no)

fire, oak leaves, a cake with a bean in or porridge with a bean in. Why don't you google on pagan festivals and see what turns up?
i saw a nice decoration on countdown to xmas on itv,,where someone gathered a lot of birch twigs and sort of bundled it all together and put little bird ornaments in it,,it was lovely ..the main thing to have is greenery and lots of natural products..you could make pomanders with oranges studded with cloves,,and tied up with a ribbon..or you could collect pine cones and make decorations..pagans in ancient times didnt have todays gaudy plastic things so everything from the earth was utilised..you have plenty of time to gather dry and prepare,,someone has been teaching me to make jewellry from twigs and also its possible to make whistles,,so i am sat whittling away...if you want a tree as acentre piece gather loads of twigs and make your own...if you have a garden and you have some rosemary or lavender ..dry it in the summer bend an old wire coat hanger into a wreath shape and make your own xmas wreath..a lot of it is what you can lay your hands on where ever you live..some local gypsys asked for the top off my connifer trees and they wove the branches onto wreath frames and made themselves some pocket money,,they added a bit of holly and they bought me one round and it was lovely..anything is possible...gypsy

Try and use twigs and branches that have already fallen from the tree. If you take live twigs or branches from a tree you must ask the tree permission first.
