Nobody!

It just came to be accepted as our national anthem through custom and practice. Nobody really knows the words since, apart from the first verse, there's no actual agreement as to what the words really are!

So we're left with just the one verse which republican atheists like myself can't bring ourselves to sing. (Who on earth should I call upon a god, whom I don't believe in, to 'save' a monarch, whom I refuse to recognise?).

Chris
I'm quite happy to sing it, but it isn't exactly rousing is it?
Having married into a family of Scots, the later verse is studiously ignored!
yes craft I agree, it's a dirge. When you watch the rugby matches and the other teams being roused by their stimulating national anthems, ours is just drear.
would that be 'dreich' then.......

The most wimpiest, least inspiring anthem in the world has to be the Canadian one!
The National Anthem, as explained by Al Murray.

Enjoy.
