World War 2 A Large dog would guide Sailors Back to

During W.W 2 In a land far away,Sailors would go ashore for a drink ,some would have far to much, lucky for them there was a Large Dog possible a Great Dane who would guide them back to their ships,this was overseas, maybe Suez Canal way,
The Telegraph did a feature story on this ,also a Statue was commisioned and now stands near to the docks or Town.
Any ideas please i have looked on the Telegraph archives but one needs to be a member ,it is a pity but I am unable to afford the fee to join.

Hi Thank you all
My friend Edwin is 90 i was talking with him and he told me a tale, regarding a dog who used to help the sailors ,back to the docks when they were on unsteady legs,I was fascinated ,hence the reason I posted the question.

I have found the dog It was called "Nuisance " he was enrolled into the Royal Navy as he was in the habit of boarding trains to go to find the sailors ,the train company would not let him ride for free, so the Navy decided he should join up, on the enrollment form they had to give a christian name the chap replied that he was just nuisance ,so he was then forever known as Able Seaman "Just Nuisance" this allowed him to have free travel ,all meals ,medical care etc.He eventually passed away in 1946,There is a Statue made of bronze in Simons Town in South Africa.in his memory.

Hi thank you to you all,for helping me trace this superb story ,I was talking to one of my Young@Heart chums,who was telling me all about the antics when he and hundreds of sailors were allowed a Run- Ashore in Cape Town South Africa, during World War 2,
His story was "on the money"












I was born in the 50s I wonder wthat sort of tales we will have to tell, from the past 70 years.I hope we are all here to tale
