Berwick upon Tweed

I remember being told a long time ago that strictly speaking the town of Berwick upon Tweed in the Scottish borders was still at war with Germany. Apparently this was because when WW1 was declared the official declaration stated The United Kingdom of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Berwick upon Tweed - the reason being that whether the town was in England or Scotland was being debated. By the time the war ended the matter had been settled and Berwick was officially in Scotland so was not mentioned separately on the Armistace agreement, meaning that strictly speaking Berwick is still at war. Was someone just winding me up or is there an element of truth in this?

Germany no, russia yes. The story relates to the Crimean war not the second world war.

the scottish league.

it used to be a popoular quiz question. what is the only english football team to have two names of seven letters, Berwick Rangers. it used to confuse people as tehy would look through the english leagues and not find one whereas it was actually in the scottish leagues

something went wrong with my answer there what i was basically trying to say is berwick is offically in england and not scotland although its football team plays in the scottish league.

Berwick used to be mentioned specifically in international treaties etc because of the historical uncertainty about it having been in Scotland or England.  I believe that Berwick signed a peace treaty with Russia a few years ago, and they used it as an escuse for friendly mutual meetings.

Anyone who has never visited the town and has read the above may get the impression that it's not a nice place. We spent a week there last year and it's a lovely little town with fantastically preserved town walls. Definitely worth a visit for historical interest, and if you have a 'thing' for three eyed haemophiliacs then that's a bonus.
