Ancient Astronauts Theory
75 Answers
Not a question, but I've just watched a documentary on the History channel entitled 'Ancient Aliens'. For anyone who's interested in finding out more about this theory, this is not a bad place to start. The narrator is a little sensationalist and hence, irritating, but don't let that deter you. I don't when it's on again, but it's extremely interesting and worth looking out for.

It's highly feasible and think it explains the myths and legends relating to 'gods' perfectly - and I mean ALL of them. By the way, I've seen some of those blocks of stone you mention. Unbelievable - literally!!
Francis, not really, although the Egyptians did appear to discover civilisation rather suddenly, so that theory is sometimes mentioned in some of the more sensationalist literature.
Sue, I don't know. It lasted two hours, and I think it's the first of a series.
Sandy, have you watched it?
Jack, quite right. (Is your avatar a picture of your son - and grandchild?).

Yes - my boys ! :o)
I used to find Von Daniken's books fascinating and they are what piqued my interest in the subject matter............unfortunately, much of his own 'interpretation' and eye-witness accounts have since been discredited. However, that he managed to find artifacts and publish photographs which certainly invite discussion is still something to be excited about......

As a teenager, reading his books, I was blown away with the seeming 'obviousness' of his theories. They all slotted together so well and so sensibly and credibly..........
And then the 'debunking' began and I found it difficult to determine which bits were actual and beyond refuting and which bits had been constructed by EVD.........
However, I have certainly never lost my inclination to believe the main thrust of his argument.
Hmmmmm................possibly a good time to revisit the books ? :o)

Jack - me too, von Daniken's Chariots of the Gods was what started my interest in those theories, later debunked or not. It is still astounding that so much was done in ancient times by what we tend to think of as less sophisticated civilisations in past eras - I think if we could be transported back to take a look, we might be surprised at what we found. So much is theory - and many people have fixed views about the likelihoods - me, I don't think anyone really knows. Fascinating stuff, though.
For what purpose did ancient astronauts leave their 'mark' on Earth?
It has made humans 'now' realise that many moons ago monuments were created solely by visitors from other planets or the visitors used humans as their construction crew(???) or it's significance is for reasons we will never fully understand and even now are only guessing based on the artifacts left behind. Are the ancient people just as barbaric as us and even with the technology to travel space, took their wars, mixed beliefs and cultures to this planet?

Personally, very sceptical of the idea that ETs visited us in the past and somehow shaped what we have become.
I too read Chariots of the Gods when young - but he is discredited, and much of his "examples" of alien influenced artifacts have been shown conclusively to be either man-made, or forgeries ( also man -rather than ET-made :) )
Much of the belief in early visitations by ETs seems to stem from an argument of personal incredulity - ie looking at some massive stone construction, the argument is that previous primitive societies would have no way of constructing such an object or whatever - but to me, that is really patronizing to our forefathers, and rather downplays the sheer creativity and ingenuity of our species itself.
I have seen lots and lots of speculation - but nowhere have I seen any compelling evidence to suggest that ETs have ever visited us. - Just lots and lots of examples of how the sweat of thousands, and some creativity and ingenuity, have withstood the test of time :)

I have always believed that we (humans) were not originally from here or the remains of other civilisations from other worlds. This world I believe is one of many inhabited by people, maybe to us, more technologically evolved but their space vehicles are like our trams to them. Their input into our evolution is probably the reason any of exist and keep existing.
A fascinating subject and one that will always cause debate, and while not having especially strong feelings either way, when I consider the fact that each star is a sun each with possible a large number of planets and the distances involved I dont find it particularly hard to believe that at some time in our past another race passing by on their way to who knows where stopped here and gave us a jump start
