garden hedge boundary line

can anyone plz let me know if the garden hedge is the boundary line?
because I want to built a wall removing the hedges which are all on my land but the neighbour insists that half of the hedges belong to him, there is a brick line running a foot away from the hedges and i think that is the boundary line, but my neighbour disputes that the boundary line is the roots of the hedges not the brick line parting the gardens.
