Paint on wallpaper

Couple of years ago I overpainted a paperred white chip board looking paper at the bottom of my stairs with white matt and it came out looking good.
To freshen it up I'm doing the same. However, this time it's left patches that look greasy and won't let me paint over them.
Any ideas please.

If, over the years, grease has found its way onto the paper, somehow, emulsion, which is water-based, won't cover up anything oily or greasy - it'll keep coming through. Get some oil-based paint (eg eggshell or gloss) and paint over the greasy areas. Give it 24hrs, then paint over the areas again with the matt white emulsion. It may require a couple of coats, but the greasy stains won't come back because they will be sealed under the oil-based paint.

Hi, you could try removing the greasy patches by washing with sugar soap first, then repaint it. If that doesn't work you could try as moralman says and use an oil based paint first, then redo with emulsion again. I personally use oil based undercoat and gloss mixed together 50/50 to seal things like this in as the undercoat will give a duller finish which I find is easier to emulsion over afterwards.

Thx guys but where can I buy some oil based paint. Went to Homebase but they didn't have any.
