Clearing a partially blocked drain

In our house we had what is basically an outside drain but due to a utility 'lean-to' - well its really a £2000 UPVC and breeze block add-on - it is now effectively inside.

The drain used to service the kitchen sink , dishwasher and the down pipe from the roof rainwater gutter. The last of the three has been re-routed but the washing machine waste been added.

I have a problem where the water is not running away fast enough and, though not causing major problems, it does back up a little if, on the very odd occasion, all three are draining at once. There is also a smell coming from it. By using a cut out floor tile this is largely cut out but does not solve the problem

I suspect a build up of fat in the drain and wondered if anyone could advise a simple solution. Would the Mr. Muscle type drain cleaner work on an outside drain? I have seen similar in B&Q but reviews only seem to give it 2 out of 5 stars.

I do NOT own a set of rods and would be loath to get one just for a single job.

Try soda crystals. Chuck a load down there.

Do not call Dyno-rod...major rip-offs.

I agree with Flip....tip loads of soda crystals down and leave overnight. Rinse the next day with boiling water.

I don't think you'd be able to use drain rods anyway, puter. I guess that you mean a "gulley". You won't be able to rod around the trap (sort of U-bend at the bottom of the gulley.)
I'd always be inclined to move it outside, or dig it up and replace it with something more practical.

Stick your best arm in a heavy duty refuse bag, tape it round your arm, and dive in. It's full of gunk!

I had the same problem with an identical drain system. Sludge in the U-bend. I cleared it in minutes with a wet-dry vacuum cleaner.

I would think hardened/calcified crap in the gully trap.
Get your arm down it and feel!
Knock out the rubbish, drag it back out, and it will probably be fine again.

Think I'll try the soda thing before The Builders (and Albags) suggestion. Afraid if I get down with my arm up a drain I might never get up again!!!

And dont have a wet/dry vacuum :(
