Thermostatic radiator valves
3 Answers
2 of my Drayton TRV4 valves do not work and one has the top broken off. An easy job for a competent DIYer to do (pending good instructions) or best for a plumber? Also the valves cost £18 for identical replacement. Much difference between these n the £6-8 ones seen in Screwfix n Toolstation etc? Looks don't matter to me, just ease of use. Thk u.

Don't forget. If you buy an identical one, you only need to change the head (if that's what's broken). You can leave the valve body on there. The heads are held on by a simple screwed chrome ring.
Have a poke about :o)

The problem may be .. if not working at all .. the close-off seals are worn/perished/stuck. Sticking happens through period of non-use. In the summer, it's best to open ALL TRV's fully, so they don't stick shut.
Honeywell/Drayton TRV2 and 4's are dear because they use a large lisuid-filled capsule instead of a waxstat type. Many prefer them for looks (chrome cap) or the fact that they are more sensitive in operation .. therefore control temp a little different.
However, many tradesmen use a cheap standard TRV .. because they never whistle . .. and they are reliable.
Take your pick.
Valve replacement means drain-down.
