What's a 'foystey smell'?
Any holes in your skirting? could be a dead mouse. Or....do you have a fireplace, it could be a dead bird in the chimney. Try completely airing the room. Then see where the smell comes back when you close all the windows. If you have a few people living there ask them to help by standing in the room to see who smells it first. Horrible for you. I do sympathise. Good luck!
I assume he means fusty...but does it really matter, honestly!?
Do you have an open chimney? A dead bird once got stuck in ours.
Could something have been spilt on the carpet and not cleaned up?
Anngel, it matters if you're trying to work out what the smell could be coming from. I've never heard of 'fusty' either.
spilt milk?

foystey means like a mildew, damp kind of smell, i have have worked out that it's coming from one corner of the room so its not a bird in the chimney, i will check the skirtings for a mouse, grrrrr its doing my head in i am walking round like a sniffer dog!! haha I did think it was something spilt and not cleaned up andi have cleaned all the settee and the carpets and its still there :-(
cut a raw onion in half and leave it near the smell
Fusty would make you think of damp. Is there a down pipe from the gutters on the wall outside the room?
Maybe it is 'damp' Could you have a problem with your damp course?

I am on a mission now to locate the smell!!! Thankyou for all your advice i will check it all out this morning, i've had better bank holidays LOL :-/
Could it be something under the floorboards ? Mould maybe, or a dead mouse ?
devil - when we moved into our bungalow, we had horrible smells - we located it to a drain in the conservatory - Mr. T. dug the floor up and there it was a rainwater drain. That was a musty damp smell.

Musty smells can nearly always be water leakage of some sort.
Foisty is a very common word, with a different meaning to Fusty

;o)
Lofty...that is interesting. But how can you have a smiling smell? LOL
You need to dispose of the body properly in future to avoid this sort of thing.
Lottie, I've never heard of either. I wonder if they're words more common in some regions than others - as some words are?
In my neck of the woods "Foisty" is used to describe a damp and rotting smell. Musty would be a dry smell, like some charity shops, fusty would be a stale and decaying smell. All similar but different.!

I agree that this particular foisty smell is a dead something under the floorboards.
Agree with Maidup. I originate from London by the way, but I wouldn't have thought it was a regional thing.
