Convert hinged door to sliding-door

Would anyone know how I could go about using an existing sliding door-RAIL (above the kitchen lintel) to fix a spare hinged door (which has no hinges on it and is presently just leaning against the wall) to? My idea is to screw ball-transfer units to the bottom of the door (like big steel ballbearings in a claw-unit) then find some track it can run on. No one seems to produce anything like this - except for lightweight wardrobe doors - or ball-units designed for other uses. Anyone know where I could get some parts to adapt? many thanks.

They have the most commonly used domestic kits. If you need something heavier, then look at garage door systems and commercial ones.

You can probably buy some roller fixings to screw to the top of the door that will run in the existing rail. Then you only need to cut a grove in the bottom of the door so it can run over to a lip to stop it flapping.

Would it be impracticable to unscrew the rail and take it to your hardware merchant so you can get a suitable set of rollers?

I prefer doors with roller on top as many which roll on the bottom make a rumbling sound.

you can get a 'by-pass door hardware' or a 'sliding door hardware' at any hardware store. there's a lot of variety to choose from. You will need to install a rail at header height on the wall for the hardware to mount to. but it is a relatively simple job.
