leaking washer

The cold water pipe is leaking at the back, it seems to be the threads on the plastic connection which brings the water into the washer. The washer itself is very old so I don't think we will be able to buy a new connection in imperial size these days so please is there anything we could buy to seal the joint to make it waterproof. We can't get the top part of the pipe out without taking the back off the washer which we wouldn't like to do anyway. Just hope it doesn't mean a new washer :o( -TIA rosy

I assume you mean a washing machine. What make and model is it and how old?

Sorry, yes it is a washing machine. Now you're not going to believe this Howard, but it is a Zanussi S218T and it is 28years old!!! It is a great machine, solid and in great nick, (except for the leaking hose of course) so I know we won't get any parts for it, hence my question. Hope you can help - rosy

Rozy - any competent plumber will be able to sort you out on this. You need her/him to check that the diameter of the washing machine outlet and the pipe it's feeding into.
It might be that a slow leak has developed over years between a metric water pipe and an imperial washing machine part.
This isn't a big problem to sort - even B&Q will carry an appropriate adaptor piece.
The problem lies in leaving this slow leak to ooze into your flooring and kitchen units, making particleboard swell up and generally causing mayhem.
But you need to know it is not a biggie to sort so you don't get ripped off by a plumber.

The connection is Imperial anyway (3/4" BSP)

Obviously I am not familiar with anything that old. I am surprised that you have to remove part of the machine to get at the connection. Are you sure about that?

Yes Builder that is exactly what I mean, I never thought of screwfix (and we get their catalogues sent all the time) - thank you so much X Thank you Mosaic and Howard too. (We just couldn't see how to get at the part without taking the back off Howard, but I don't think we would have attempted it anyway) Glad no one suggested it was time we bought anew one anyway :o) - thanks again -rosy

:o( Oh dear, Mr Posy doesn't think that IS what we need, Builder, He says he thinks it is the threads on the part that the pipe screws onto which are worn, and we can't get to it, there is only about an inch coming out but it seems to be part of a much bigger unit, which is why he mentioned the back coming off. The pipe and connection are fine- we were hoping there was some 'gunk' we could buy to make it waterproof. Maybe we had better look for a plumber? Thanks again- rosy

rosy, you could try disconnecting the pipe and wrapping some PTF tape around the threads and then reconnect the pipe.

Ah .......... so, there's an inch of thread poking out (spigot) that the hose is screwed onto?

It's unlikely that the threads are at fault. Does it look rusty at all, where the spigot connects to the rest?

No there isn't any rust anywhere, but the spigot or pipe is plastic anyway, and can't see the rest of it. What is PTFE please, sounds good, I will look it up in my screwfix catalogue :o) Thank you both for replying -rosy

PTFE tape is white in colour and about half an inch wide, pretty cheap also. You will find some in the screw fix book.
Whats the car prob, rosy. ?
