Which Woodstain/varnish

we painted our bannisters with black woodstain Saturday morning, well not finished yet, they are still tacky and it is Thursday, we are thinking of getting a different one, any suggestions on what dries quickest? we have had the heating on too TIA

yes rubbed with sandpaper and had wood stain on before

oh sorry, on the tin says up to 24 hours to dry

One of my most common jobs is fitting handrails. I often give them a final coat after they are fitted.
I just use any of the wickes internal varnishes. They are touch dry in 10 minutes.

Who makes that woodstain, Ches? Tell us, so we can avoid using it!

I guess something in a previous coat is interfering with the chemical drying process. Everyone has their preferences, but Sadolin is well known as being among the best.

Possibly, it may have been applied too thick. That sometimes results in a skin forming... preventing the thickness from drying out properly.

If it's still "hanging around", you may have to wipe it clean and start again.

Strange. Sadolin is top quality stuff, and yes, it can be slow-drying. In my experiece slow-drying paints tend to provide a better-looking, better-lasting and tougher finish. But I can't think why yours is taking quite so long. Did you stir, stir, stir, before application? Some paints need this.
