We are looking into the best interior wall lining of our timber cabin we are hopefully going to build, we are trying to build it with a virtually zero carbon foot print, so we cant use plaster board, we may try and find a reasonably priced wooden panelling but dont want it took tacky like the old cheap wood effect panels of the 1980s.

Any ideas?

You're getting on with it then Rattman?

Zero carbon is going to be the problem. I wouldn't use plasterboard anyway in your case. I would go for MDF sheets, maybe 9mm or 12mm. Perfect finish for painting conventionally.
Not zero carbon though :o(

Not much help to you yet, I'm afraid. I'm going to have to do a bit of research.

Going to be difficult. Even the old panelboards you mention (I particularly remember a chip shop in Bideford in the 80s) will not be completely zero.
Though they can look ok if painted in the right colour. Anything rather than that mock woodgrain look.
some more here RATTER

it might also be worth having a word with the Forestry Commission - I believe they have some eco-lodge holiday parks, and might be able to advise

The builder, we are still looking at different construction methods and materials and costings etc, if we can keep our carbon footprint at virtually zero we are far more likely to get permission to build on agricultural land, of course it isn't quite that simple but on the right land with the right plan we should be able to do it.

Thanks woof, lots of good stuff on that site!! :-))
Have a look at Mike Wye's site, Ratts...............

Not far from you at Buckland Filleigh. Look at "clayboard"

Also, think about.......
Straw bales (simply rendered inside and out)
Cob blocks (same)
Tyres (filled with clay/cob (Google "Earthships")

No need to commit to timber frame yet :o)

We have looked at the straw bale and tyres buildings, its all a bit freaky for me, I prefer to deal with a product that I know, I would consider it if we had a specialist in that field that would help in the construction.

I will check out that site, thanks.
