Ventilation For Gas Fire
4 Answers
My neighbour has recently laid laminate flooring in the living room which has an open gas fire. In doing so he has covered over the hole which was in the suspended timber floor next to the fire place. Obviously he will have to replace it. What he needs to know is what size of hole he now needs to cut to comply with regulations. I have already told him that he must use an open grill (non closeable) to cover it. I assume he can relocate the vent to another area in the room so that it is not such an eyesore.

From what you've said, Mr Heep, the standard size is 100 square cms. Roughly a 4" x 4" hole, or rectangular of the same area. Type of fire; size of output; even room size can influence vent sizes. A GasSafe guy could assess all that, and specify if in doubt.

Thanks for that. He thinks the hole he covered up was approx 200 long by 60 wide - so something similar. The grill covering this will restrict this slightly but no doubt it will be adequate. I will lend him a couple of hole cutters and he can join them together with a jigsaw. If he angles the louvres towards the wall it should look quite tidy.
You could advise the neighbour to get one of these. They're not that expensive and might save a life.
