should the shiny side of the leather patch or the rough side be visible?
my patches have been put on with the rough side showing and I feel
that this wrong.
can someone who really knows about clothes repairs put me right about this
before I fall out with the good lady seamstress. many thanks.

your choice, there is no right way. If you want them shiny side out then get them changed.
I don't think there is necessarily a right or wrong way to put leather patches on. In my opinion it is all down to personal choice. Can you ask the seamstress to take them off and put them back the way you would prefer?
I would prefer rough side outermost. That way it creates more friction and my elbows don't keep slipping off the bar top.
Here in the U.S., patches on elbows of jackets really only occur with heavy or roguh woolens and especially plaids or faux tartans... seemingly to emulate our Scottish friends and ancestors... at any rate the rough material and ultra-casual styling demands 'rough out' on the patches...
Do people still use these patches, takes me back to chalk dusty maths teachers back in the 60s.

The sort who used to sling blackboard rubbers and chalks at the inattentive in the class!
And while you were getting the elbows patched it would be a good opportunity to have thin leather cuffs fitted.
Have seen a number of winter jackets with elbow patches seems as if they are making a come back.
The classic and most expensive leather for such patches is a good quality suede. To emulate this, have the rough side on the outside.
Should have added the reason why suede is used...it's because suede has a certain amount of elasticity and stretch recovery, which is needed at the elbows. Ordinary tanned leather doesn't have this.
+1 for heathfields answer. I've always known the patches to be suede...much nicer looking and more practical than 'shiny'.
It's funny that a fashion for patches on the knees of ones flannels never took off. They get fairly baggy after wear.
The 'rough side' is very fashionable suede.
