The lights are those tiny flat ones on a strip, so do I need a transformer kind of thingy?

They are LED lights on a strip OG, will have to look for a link
Hopefully the strip, or the spec, says whether it has the drop down circuitry internally for direct connection to the mains, or not. If not then yes, you'd need a transformer (ac) or a power supply (dc).
Google the site LEDHUT and look for 12v transformers (known as drivers.)

Around six or seven pounds each for a 6 watt transformer. Connect the strip in one end and you can connect a cable and ordinary plug at the other end.

Thank you both. Forgot to say there are only two wires, red & black, so is earth wire not needed?
To me that sounds like no earth is needed because you are only connecting 12v.
OG's right. Because it's a transformer, it's "separated" extra-low voltage, so no earth needed.

Connect the earth at the plug though. Don't connect it at the transformer end. Leave it free.
