My craft room light just went bang, took out the bulb, went and found a new one. Put that in.
Went to fuse box and sure enough, "lights 2" had flicked off, tried to put it down again, but it keeps going off straight away.
No good me asking Mr F with his Alzheimer's, and I don't want to make a fool of myself ringing an electrician if it's not necessary.
Advice needed please.

something is blowing , an appliance causing overload on the circuit do yo have something on you do not usually use or something that might be faulty
try turning one thing at a time off 'till the switch will reset then you can identify the culprit
Question Author
Everything as normal, nothing new on the circuit at all, well saying that, had an Ott light about 6 months on my desk, but that's ok.
Lounge lights, bedroom3 (here) and bedroom 1 lights have gone off.
Question Author
Ok, I'll give that a go, thanks, .
It could have taken out another bulb on the "lights 2" circuit Ferlew. Switch off all the lights and reset the circuit breaker. Then switch them on one by one, if the current trip goes again change that bulb. Repeat. You could of course have replaced the bulb with a duff one, it happens.
I'd suspect a short inside the bulb-holder. If it's just a pendant lamp fitting (or something similar) it's really easy to replace and so cheap that you wouldn't need to worry about wasting lots of money if it turned out to be something else anyway.

Just a thought Ferlew is this light ceiling mounted and therefor on the "light" circuits or is it a table light plugged into a wall socket. ie the 13 amp ring main?
Does it make a noise or spark when you try to re-set it....what make and current rating is the mcb?...most mcb's are pushed UP to re-set..the mcb may have become damaged during the fault and need replacing
If the circuit is labelled 'Lights 2', Togo, it seems clear that it's one for ceiling (or possibly wall) lights. A circuit for the 13A sockets would be labelled something like 'Upstairs Ring'.
Question Author
Ok, the only lights that were on at the time, was the ceiling light in here, and my Ott lamp (a daylight craft lamp type thing) on my desk.
Also the hall light which I keep on when Mr F is in bed.
All plugged into the wall lights work fine. Just ceiling and wall lights in lounge, ceiling light in here, and ceiling light/fan thingy in bedroom one are the ones not coming on.
Sorry, yes I pushed UP the one switch that was down, the RCD one was still UP, should I poke the blue reset button on it anyway?

At the risk of someone mentioning an actress and a bishop . . .

If in doubt, poke it!
Does it spark or make a noise when you try to re-set it...no need to mess with the rcd
Question Author
Oh heck, wish me luck >>>>>> off to poke blue button.
Question Author
Ok, who's bliddy idea was that? (jk)
Router and everything went off, loud buzzing from god knows where for a few seconds RCD switch down, pushed it back up after noise stopped, and tried putting light 2 back UP, it won't stay up.
//If the circuit is labelled 'Lights 2', Togo, it seems clear that it's one for ceiling (or possibly wall) lights.//
Yep. We can assume that Buen, however with electrickery I tend not to "believe" anything unless I can verify it on the spot so to speak. Just hoping that Ferlew is not rushing or panicking and is now back in business.
Hi Sparks you OK?
furlew...if you want a remote diagnosis..I need answers.
So Ferlew "lights 2" has your router and " everything" running from it so I doubt it is the 10amp light circuit. Unplug everything and switch off all sockets and try a reset. If it will reset, plug in and switch on one by one as I said at 20.56.
Question Author
No, it's ok, I'm not panicking, just flummoxed.
Will have to examine wall and ceiling lights in lounge, when I can see and reach them safely. 7 ruddy bulbs in there, 2 each alcove light, and three in ceiling.
Bedroom 2 which is next to lounge is perfectly ok, as is the hallway, kitchen, utility room, and outside lights at both doors.
Can I just add that I am no electrician but the fuse box buttons are quite stiff and once or twice I've thought I'd pushed one back up but had not given it the final 'click' Its worth a try with some elbow grease behind it .
Question Author
No sorry Togo, the router went off when I hit reset, it was still on before that.
Think I had better leave things until I can see clearly what I am doing, and I have someone near me when I go up the ladder.
Thank you all for suggestions to date. :)
