Can I paint over this in a silk? Do I need to prepare the surface? Is silk the new eggshell by the way?

Never tried but I can't think why not. Clean the blackboard first to remove chalk or whatever.

Eggshell and silk are different and both have been around for years.
I’ve a small blackboard I use for notes, when it gets shabby lookin I give it a clean with wd40 and it brings it back to black

Sorry I haven't been too clear, it's a windowsill covered in blackboard paint, a long overdue job. Once occupied by my 'goth' daughter, now many years later needed for her daughter. So it's the surface I wondered about, could that be painted back to its old self. Thanks for your replies.
Blackboard paint's nothing special, Eleena. A light rub-down, and a couple of coats of silk (I guess you mean something like "satinwood")
Clean the sill. Sand it. Put water based primer on and then apply a water based paint. Not sure if silk is water based but it will tell you on the tin.
