I want to fit a fluorescent light in my garage. Is it important that I have a pull cord or should I switch on via a 15amp plug into a switched socket outlet ?

Cheers.

Thanks Balders. I did wonder if there were any regulations that specify
connection to a fused outlet box and on/off via a pull cord.

I know the thing would work either way but would like to be compliant.
No regs expert, but can't see any increase in risk plugging in lights over plugging in drills or heaters.
youll be ok with switch via socket outlet Derek. Think most people associate flory fittings with pull cord because they are often used in bathrooms where pull switch is needed to prevent any possibility of electric shock
I've got four in my garage hard wired through 2 x normal two way switches by both garage doors.
Simple answer is will your hands be possibly wet/damp. If yes install a pull cord. ie bathroom.

Thanks everyone, and no risk of wet hands M'bob.

Sorry to be nanny, Derek, but I just wanted to remind you that garages and other "outside" locations should be covered with RCD protection.

You probably have it already back at the mainboard in the house.
Question Author
Thanks, Builder. Yes, the RCD is new.

Difficult to know exactly what you are trying to do. If you plug it in with an appropriate fuse then no problem. However do not take a wire from the the back of a socket through a pull switch. You need to run it through a fused spur (You could use a switched fuse spur and do it in one). If metal cased ensure the case earth is good and tested especially in a garage.

As an aside take a look at the LED 'florescent' tubes. Screwfix do quite a reasonably priced one.
