It can be done - but I'm rubbish at painting. Get a professional. Much cheaper (and less messy) than replacing the kitchen.

Definitely get a professional Dave.
I would if a quick face lift is wanted. I have nasty melamine ones that I've painted twice. The first time I used Fusion Mineral paint...no major prep required...just a clean with sugar soap, a tiny jar did 7 or 8 doors...plus a coat of water based decorators varnish. After 2 years I wanted a colour change and used a brand called Cornish Mineral paint. Same process. Did it a year ago and it's scrubbable and has held up well.
Both paints are said to be usable on many different surfaces.

Thanks pasta.
Anne. I personally think that they look "painted"
Question Author
Jj even if they are done by a professional painter as opposed to a handyman/ woman ?
Anne. First thing we did on moving in was to get a company to paint all the kitchen cabinets, cooker hood, drawers from gloomy dark wood.
They look fantastic. They even turned one door into a shorter one for the new dishwasher and you'd never know.
They don't look like older doors etc. painted at all.
We did ask to see samples of before and after pieces and they happily did that.
Do you want Dave to put a door photo up of ours?

Dave, very helpful , thank you
Yes please gness.
I'll go and find him. :-)
MIL paid a company to come in an revamp her small kitchen - they painted her doors and drawers and a new work surface for about a grand - this was 5 years ago and they still look good
Question Author
That’s excellent Helen .
These were boring pine doors - they took them away, stripped them back to the wood and repainted - it was done three years ago and they still look brand new.

The dishwasher panel was actually a full height door that they cut in half (horizontally), resized and then glued back together - even if you know where the join is it's impossible to see it.

I think the crucial thing was doing it 'off site' in a proper spray-painting shop - it's way beyond the finish any in situ paint job could achieve.

Lovely finish on them Dave .
Thank you for posting :-) x
For an inexpensive makeover, some people just replace the doors.
Only if it's just the doors, Hoppy. We had lots of other bits that needed to be done and be matching.
I did think that painted kitchen cabinets would look tacky, but they look really good looking at the pics.
SD man of a few talents afterall ;-)
Dave only posted the pictures, Arky!
Must admit I was unsure of how good they'd look til I saw the samples the company offered. They did explain how they got such a good finish but I've forgotten that bit.. :-)
