Saw MrSmow off on his business trip, then went back in  to sort a few things. Long story short I was barefoot and ended up smashing my left foot - mainly the little toe - on a brick wall. Good god the pain, I literally cried. The phrase 'stubbing your toe' is an understatement. Can't even touch it without almost  crying. Already going blue with bruising. Have managed to tape it to the toe nxt to it as no point going to hosp, that's all they will do anyway. Can barely stand on it so am on bed with foot raised. Oh well, didn't want to do any disco dancing tonight anyway!!

Try and get some ice on to the toe and thr area around it, should stop it swelling. Good luck.

Hi barry - yep I've taken some but not having any effect yet : (

fbg -    can't believe how painful it is. I could just about walk earlier, but just went to get some water and can barely put any weight on my foot at all now.

Sending a very careful hug. What an awful thing to happen particularly as you're on your own.

Question Author

Oh bless you hun. I mean, I know I'm accident prone but cannot believe how such a silly thing in just 5 seconds can cause so much pain. Hope to god I can at least get about in the morning or else I'll be going down the stairs on my bottom!

Much better to put your foot up, if possible from the knee, on pillows. Use packet of frozen peas or something similar, wrapped in a towel over the entire foot. Take an anti inflammatory every 6 hours for 24 hours. Then use heat instead of cold. If you can get Ananase, pineapple extract tablets, tomorrow that would be good.

Question Author

Pineapple extract? What's it good for?

If its swollen try some Arnica 30c tablets, you should get these in health food shops

Ouch!! It's amazing how sore that can be. I know A&E won't be able to do much for your toe itself, but they might give you the good painkillers?

Question Author

Arnica - ok, I'll see if I can get some x

Ive got pretty strong co-codamol here (30/500) and am taking that at the mo. As long as I don't touch it, attempt to move it, or stand on it...... gone be a long day! ..

Ouch! Poor Smow.

-- answer removed --

I broke two toes last year Smow- hospital gave me a boot but basically they (hospital told me - they heal themselves - try the ice as somebody has suggested and on my half - the Arnica didn't work for me.

Ooops - would you have a walking stick or cruches so that can keep the weight off it.

Question Author

Yes, apparently unless the bone is sticking out then there really isn't much a hosp can do for little toes apart from strap to one nxt to it.
Still have crutches here from when I first fractured my spine. Luckily am not going out as weather is absolutely horrendous! Rain is just hammering it down and it's so dark it's like evening.

Did something similar to a big toe once. The toenail was never quite the same after, always look a bit more curved and tougher.

Hitting the small one must've been more difficult.

It may not be broken, it may be dislocated.  I did exactly the same to mine about 30 years ago.  Went to the doc who was less than interested.  It was constantly painful.  Then about 5 years later, I smacked it on the bottom of the stairs.  Instant dreadful pain followed by relief!!!!

Ice and ibuprofen for you!

Question Author

OG - yes especially as I have tiny toes! Combination of stepping sideways and round something at the same time...

BM, that sound just as bad  knocking yours the second time - ouch!!
