Gloss Paint Removal

Bit of a strange one this: I have a very old statue (made of what, I'm not entirely sure...may be porcelain..) which was beautiful in its day. It's must be at least 40 years old, maybe older, but my dear Grandmother decided to paint it over with a not-so-lovely Magnolia Gloss!

Any ideas of how I can remove it safely, without destroying the original paint underneath??

Many thanks...

I'd think twice. It's not unknown for such items to have been damaged and repaired, then painted to hide the otherwise obvious repair. And if the material the statue's made from is in any way porous, you may never get rid of all the paint.
