Is it worth fixing my car?
My car failed it's MOT today and I wanted to know whether it was worth getting the work done or to just scrap it? It's a 1994 1.2. Vauxhall Corsa and it's got the following wrong with it:
Nearside front headlamp not working on dipped beam
Offside front headlamp not working on dipped beam
Nearside front front position lamps insecure
Offside front front position lamps insecure
Centre (middle box) exhaust system has a major leak of exhaust gases
Offside rear rear wheel bearing has excessive play
Nearside rear rear wheel bearing has excessive play
Nearside front (and distorted) brake disc excessively worn
Offside front (and distorted) brake disc excessively worn
Nearside front (chassis rail) vehicle structure has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strngth within 30cm of the body mountings
Offside front (chassis rail) vehicle structure has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strngth within 30cm of the body mountings

I have no idea what any of that means by the way.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Well, basically, your headlights don't work, your exhaust is leaking, your back wheels are wobbly, your front brakes are worn out and the chassis rusting away.
Gonna cost more than the car's worth to get it through the test. And next year the rusting will just be getting worse anyway.
Cheaper in short and long term to get another car.

What will it cost you to change?? A lot more than fixing this one!
If you can do all the work yourself it's a no brainer- keep the car. Even if you've never considered picking up a spanner, then now's the time.Get the pipe done at kwik fit or somewhere, buy a Haynes manual and do the brakes yourself- not difficult at all, even for a beginner: basically a nut'n'bolt follow the manual job.
If you manage that then wheel bearings are within your scope, and if you havn't got any welding gear, get it done by a mobile welder at your house.
Even if you can't do ANY of it, you'll still probably have change out of 5 or 6 hundred quid, and then you'll have a known quantity car for the next year, and what sort of other unknown car will you get for that??
