Moving home to avoid North London Accent

My brother in law has a bee in his bonnet regarding moving to the Country which is fine. One of the reasons is that he dos'nt want his son growing up in North London with a North London Accent ( he is orignally from Bucks but spent most of his childhood in a gated home in California) By moving to Henley upon Thames or similiar, his son will have the best School, less crime and Sunny afternoons by the Thames and Conservative clubs. I call it white flight and I am offended that he thinks that way. Is he right or is he a pratt

Sorry but I think he is right. He like all of us have the right to make a choice that he believes is best for his family. Just like you have the choice to disagree with him.

I think he's right, in as much as he wants the best for his son, but the way you've posted, it sounds more what he wants than whats good for his family.

i moved with my family out of south london to the middle of nowhere in lincolnshire, less crime,sunday afternoons walking the dog down leafy lanes - he's right who would want to live in london faced with that choice?

Well whatever he feels is right for him obviously is and his choices don't make him a pratt. I'm a bit confused about the accent thing though because we lived for a long time in Central (Covent Garden) and North London (Highgate, Hampstead) and my kids have a RP accent, so where you live does not necessarily designate the way you talk. That being said Henley is a nice place to live I would imagine, so why not have the best life you can have?
I don't understand the "white flight" idea either. London is multi-cultural and always will be, or are you saying that's what he's running from?

White flight is something I picked up in the States to decribe, white people moving out after a black family moves nearby. My brother in law is claims not to be racist but as the writer Micheal Moores says ' these people make a point of not being racist by always saying ' I have a black friends. I am going offthe beat n track here.

I think your brother in law has a perfect right to make whatever decisions he wants to if he feels his family will benefit. If one takes a hard look at certain areas of the country they are not improving from a social viewpoint - in terms of crime levels, educational facilities, and general quality of life, and if people want to exercise their right to vote with their feet and move, that's what generations of people in all countries have done in times past, to find a better life for themselves. If you are content to continue living where you live, that too is fine. That is your choice.

If he was moving to Henley solely for the accent then that would seem an expensive and rather daft thing to do.
As he is moving to give his family access to better schools, lifestyle and surroundings then good on him.

If he is moving to avoid another race then he will be struggling to find anywhere in this country now that isn't a mixed area.

Your nephew could always hang out at the town square at weekends along with all the deliquent 15-year-olds. I'm sure his Californian accent would go down quite well with the locals.
