Silk is a lot more durable than matt, and can be lightly sponged. It has a high sheen finish, so bounces light.

It is ideal for high traffic areas like hall, stairs and landing.

Satin is a medium sheen and can be lightly sponged as well, so is suitable for the hall, stairs and landing.

Matt is excellent for imperfect walls - it is dull and doesn't 'highlight', so hides dents and bumps. But it can't be sponged.

.
I used satin on my hall stairs and landing and wished I hadn't.
Hi HAWKE not quite sure why woodchopper wished he hadn't but to be more positive I think white Matt ceilings and silk walls in nice pastel shades gives a good lasting/wearing finish HTH Tez
PS nice to see you back Ethel excuse me using your post HAWKE thanks.
