Roots from a Maple tree

I have Two maple trees that been in the front of my house for about 25yrs, and there are a couple of roots that are coming out of the ground, and running across the walk way to the front step. I would like to know if it is possible that they could be cut out with hurting the tree?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.That depends on the size of the roots really, Generally speaking, you can cut those roots out but just cut and remove one root a year, that way you wont shock the tree, and if these are large roots the tree will have plenty of time to develop more roots to compensate for the one you have removed, just don't rush the process or you could kill the tree!!
