if its a soild wall,i would screw it to the wall with brass side brackets.
A friend of mine has a very large mirror 6ft x 6ft - above her fire place - she was advised by the firm who manufactured the mirror to get it framed before fitting above her mantle piece - or risk the glass shattering due to the weight on the fixings.

Thank you so much for suggestions. The mirror has an ornate frame and takes two folk to lift it. 31/2 foot x 6 ft Just scared of it falling down.. Don't know if should call a builder or carpenter.
Thanks again
When we put up a large (about 2 m x 1m) mirror we fixed a baton to the wall with a bevelled edge so as to make a V with the wall.

We did the same with a baton on the wall with a bevelled edge on the upper side so the two batons hooked over each other.

This meant that the load was spread over a number of fixings.

It's been up there for 5 years no trouble
You can buy security fixings for mirrors and picture frames (the hotel industry use them) they comprise two parts - a screw with a tee end and a receiver bracket to be attached to the back (and out of sight) of the frame. Seek any Framing suppliers. I have some in the garage and your welcome to a couple if I knew how to get them to you.
