We've got herringbone design oak tiles in our hall which need renovating. What is the best way to clean the tiles, and what finish is recommended - eg varnish

I guess its not sensible to try and use a sander as it would not be going with the grain?

How bad is the floor? If it's in reasonable condition you could use this;http://www.fiddes.co.uk/content/furnreviver.ht ml. Use a very fine wire wool to apply the restorer, then give it several coats of polyurethane varnish.
my parents-in-law recently had their parquet oak floor repaired (had been hidden for years under carpet) and a local french polisher did for them. cost 500, but you could probably get this done more cheaply as some of theirs needed replacing). the guy sanded it all down with a circular sander, then finished it all with manual sandpaper in places before applying various coats of varnish and stain to bring the full colour up. it looks amazing now.

have just bought a 1920s house myself, and was pleased to find the original parquet floor in our hall, so will be using the same guy!
If you work down the grades of sand paper on a floor and edging sander you will get an excellent job then put down 3 coats of bornseal . Bornseal is expensive but its worth it for the result .Ive done many . To hire the machines it costs about 70 for the weekend from most plant hire companies , thats to the trade mind you best of luk John.
