Chalk pen stains in wood grain of door

Liquid chalk wipes off most surfaces with a damp cloth... but much to my horror it doesn't wipe of a wooden door, leaving vertical marks in the grain.
Any suggestions as to what would get the marks out? I've tried plenty of elbow grease and generic surface cleaners.
