painting on bare bedroom walls

i am decorating my sons bedroom. he wants to strip off the wallpaper and simply have plain painted walls.
am i best off using liner paper rather than painting straight onto the walls?
also, i have some of those sponge paint pads - will they flow across the liner paper ok - i see no reason why not but thought i'd best ask?

Personally I;d just paint the walls. If the walls are scabby, try a woodchip and painting over that. The lines will show too much if you use lining paper (which I beleive should be pasted horizontal rather than vertical, tho I am not sure)

If the wallpaper pattern has no shiny-like metallic flecks you should be able to paint straight over it with a good quality paint It would help if it is a heavy pattern to Uni-bond the walls first which will key the surface and blind the pattern.sponge pads used with emulsion are probably the fastest way to go.

if the existing wallpaper is in good condition and still well stuck to the wall, then you should be able to paint over it with no trouble (with the exception of the paper mentioned by Nonomaybe). If you decide to strip the wallpaper, whether to paint directly onto the wall or not would depend on the condition of the plasterwork underneath. If you decide to put lining paper up to paint over get the highest grade possible to cover any imperfections in the plaster, it is hung vertically if you are painting over the top, only hang horizontally if you are intending to paper over it, this is so the joins from both papers are not directly over one another

unfortunately he had already removed most of the paper before deciding what he wanted!

I have done what your son wants to do and its not a problem - the only thing is you have to make sure the bare walls are smooth and every scrap of paper is off also you have to fill in and smooth out with Polyfilla any dents or holes..
